12 viikon kuuri astaksantiinia vähensi näiden yhdisteiden pitoisuuksia 40 tai 50 prosenttia – riippuen siitä otettiinko ravintolisää 6 vai 12 milligrammaa päivässä. Placeboryhmässä ei havaittu merkittävää muutosta.
Tutkimuksessa käytetty astaksantiini oli peräisin Haematococcus pluvialis -levästä.
